Currants

Drying grapes in the sun has its origin in Egypt and came from there to Europe. Raisins, dried grapes, are probably one of the oldest conserved foods. Today, raisins are grown mainly in Greece, South Africa, California and Australia.

Currants, which are the dark berries in comparison to the bright sultanas, are named according to the Greek port city Corinth. Unlike other types of raisins they are not sulphured.
Our organic raisins (we also gladly supply you with conventional products) come from their original region nearby Corinth, Greece, and consist of high quality, hand-picked and sundried grapes of the prime quality Vostizza (protected indication of origin). They are dark purple to black, soft and meaty in texture and are characterized by a special sweet taste.
Currants contain a large amount of antioxidants (flavonoids, anthocyanins, resveratols, polyphenols) and are an excellent source of minerals (potassium, magnesium, zinc, calcium, iron and phosphorus).

During cultivation, drying and water purification of the fruits, neither pesticides nor other chemicals are applied. However on request, the cleaning water can be mixed with chlorine.
All steps, from cultivation to harvest to the point of packaging and transportation of our currants, are carried out in hygenic and environmental standards. Already since 1994, the principles of HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) have been used during processing and storage of the product.
The currants are certified by DIO, the Greek organization for ecological agriculture and are constantly reviewed by association agronomists.
